County Jail Equipment Replacement Ribbon Cutting

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Commission, and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, will celebrate the completion a major equipment replacement and energy conservation project at the County Jail with a ribbon cutting on Monday, December 9, 2013, starting at 11 a.m. at the cooling plant on the eastside and in the back of the County Jail (333 NE 39th Ave., Gainesville). The public and the media are invited.  Refreshments will be served.

This project is the highlight of the over 45 projects completed at the County Jail over the past 10 years.

The project includes the following:

·       The installation of 92 solar panels to reduce the cost to heat water

·       Installation of an ICON water conservation project saving millions of gallons of water annually

·       A kitchen remodel project involving the installation of energy star appliances

·       Replacement of old and inefficient washers and dryers with energy efficient equipment

·       Installation of a premium efficient water cooled heating and cooling plant reducing electrical, gas, water and waste water consumption

·       Installation of a foam roof significantly reducing heat load and reduce AC tonnage

Benefits include:

·       Substantial reduction in utility cost

·       Reduction in Green House Gas Emission

·       Improvement to indoor air quality

·       Substantial reduction in equipment failure and maintenance cost

The project was started in October 2010, and completed in December 2013. The total project cost was approximately $12.7M.

Speakers at the event include Alachua County Commission Chair Lee Pinkoson, Alachua County Manager Betty Baker, Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell, Jail Director Major Charles Lee, and Facilities Manager Charlie Jackson.
