8-14-18 Commission Regular Meeting and Public Hearing – Manager & Attorney Hiring on Agenda

The Alachua County Commission will conduct their Regular Meeting, and their Regular Public Hearing on Tuesday, August 14, 2018. The Regular Meeting begins at 9 a.m., and the Public Hearing begins at 5 p.m. Both meetings are in the Jack Durrance Auditorium (Room 209), located on the second floor of the Alachua County Administration Building (12 S.E. 1st Street, downtown Gainesville).

At the Public Hearing, the Commission will discuss whether or not to do a national search to fill the positions of County Manager and County Attorney. Currently, Michele Lieberman is the Interim County Manager, and Sylvia Torres is the Interim County Attorney. They have occupied these positions for a full year.

In a recent discussion, the consensus of the Commission was that both Ms. Lieberman and Ms. Torres have excelled in their interim posts. Commissioners agreed that before going to the expense of hiring a consultant to conduct a national search, these two should be considered to fill the jobs on a permanent basis.  Before considering this step, which would waive the traditional hiring process, the Commission is encouraging the public to give feedback on this matter.  The public is encouraged to attend the meeting and/or to reach out to Commissioners between now and Tuesday evening.  All five commissioners can be emailed at bocc@alachuacounty.us.
