Phifer Flatwoods Grand Opening

Alachua County Forever and Alachua Conservation Trust, Inc. celebrated the acquisition and grand opening of Phifer Flatwoods Preserve on October 11, 2008.  The celebration provided an introduction to the Preserve through a ceremonial vine cutting, a brief introductory talk, and guided nature walks. The opening took place at Phifer Flatwoods Preserve, at the Marsh Trailhead.

The protection of Phifer Flatwoods Preserve was made possible by the actions of the Alachua Conservation Trust, Inc. (ACT), a local non-profit land trust, and its many friends and supporters.  In 2005 the land was put up for auction and nearly acquired by a Louisiana developer. Aware of the critical timing of the pending sale, ACT quickly rallied the support of the local community, receiving loans from more than 50 individuals, foundations, and non-profit groups, and gifts from more than 250 households. This group effort raised nearly $3 million for the initial land purchase.  Alachua County purchased Phifer Flatwoods from ACT using Alachua County Forever Bond funds and a Florida Communities Trust Grant, thus protecting the land for future generations.

Phifer Flatwoods Preserve is accessible via the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail.  From State Road 20, travel south on CR-325 to the Phifer Flatwoods Preserve Parking Area, located at the intersection of CR-325 and CR-2082 (look for the kiosk).  Park your car in the grass parking area, and follow the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail east approximately one-half mile to the Marsh Trailhead, or ride your bike to the event from any of several trailheads along the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail.

Electric Vehicle Demonstration

Street-legal Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) will be in downtown Gainesville for a demonstration on Wednesday, October 22nd at 5:30PM, located on SE 1st Avenue next to the County Administration Building. More affordable than conventional vehicles, these plug-in electric vehicles are used for commuting and can be a strategy to combat high gasoline prices. The public is encouraged to attend the demonstration.

After the demonstration, GatormotoUV will make a brief presentation to the Alachua County Energy Conservation Strategies Commission (ECSC) about NEVs. The ECSC meeting will be held in the Grace Knight Conference Room of the Alachua County Administration Building, 12 SE 1st Street Gainesville, FL 32601.

This demonstration is an initiative of the ECSC, an Alachua County advisory committee. The mission of the ECSC is to draft by November 30, 2008 a comprehensive report on energy use, its relationship to climate change, and local socio-economic impacts, including recommendations for actions that may be implemented by the Board of County Commissioners and the community at large.

The ECSC and Alachua County staff are developing a map which depicts existing roads and streets over which these NEVs can travel.
For more information on this presentation, please contact Penny Wheat, chair of the Alachua County Energy Conservation Strategies Commission at: 352-371-2125.

Community Re-Entry Coalition

A regional workshop on offender re-entry into our community will be conducted on October 30, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Multipurpose Center located at 1028 NE 14th Street, Gainesville, FL.    The workshop “Re-entry, not an option, but a reality…  Establishing a community re-entry coalition.”  The key note luncheon speaker will be Franchatta Barber, Assistant Secretary for Re-Entry, Department of Corrections, appointed October 2008.
The workshop provides an opportunity for our community to educate regional administrators, law enforcement, community corrections, the therapeutic community, faith based initiatives and community leaders on the benefits of developing a comprehensive plan or approach to re-entry.  FACC and the local coalition development group have invited best practices re-entry programs that are evidence based, contain quantifiable measurable data to support success and demonstrate their cost effectiveness as a community alternative.
The programs and presenters are: The Savannah Impact Program, Pinellas County Ex-Offender Re-entry Coalition, Operation New Hope (faith based), Governor’s Re-Entry Advisory Council, the Florida Department of Corrections and the Office of the Attorney General.
The workshop will serve as a catalyst for our region to develop a comprehensive plan working with the Alachua County Department of the Jail, Bradford, Levy, Columbia, Gilchrist Counties Sheriff Offices and Florida Department of Correctional facilities during offender’s incarceration through their re-entry into our communities. According to the Florida Department of Corrections Inmate Population Listing (June, 2008), we have 15,367 inmates housed in local counties surrounding the Gainesville, Florida area.

Baby Slumber Program

The Phifer Flatwoods Preserve is officially open to the public as of September 20, 2008. Two trails are available for hiking and biking, with more trails to come this fall. The preserve is a 644 acre natural area southeast of Gainesville adjacent to State Road 20 where it intersects with County Road 325.

The protection of Phifer Flatwoods Preserve was made possible by the dedication and quick action of the non-profit Alachua Conservation Trust (ACT) and its many friends and supporters. This valiant group effort raised nearly $3 million for the initial land purchase. Alachua County purchased Phifer Flatwoods from ACT using Alachua County Forever Bond funds and a Florida Communities Trust Grant, thus protecting the land for future generations.

Sandra Vardaman, Land Conservation Biologist for Alachua County Environmental Protection Department, noted that Phifer Flatwoods is both naturally and culturally diverse. “Phifer Flatwoods is a mosaic of upland and wetland natural communities that is adjacent to over 3 miles of the Gainesville-Hawthorne Rail Trail,” said Vardaman. “It’s part of over 51,000 acres of conserved land that surrounds the Rail Trail. The preserve is home to a variety of species including Gopher tortoises and pitcher plants. It was also a turpentine production site in the early part of the 20th century.”

Access to Phifer Flatwoods is via the Gainesville-Hawthorne Rail Trail. The preserve is a 9 mile bike ride from the Gainesville Rail-Trailhead and a 6 mile bike ride from the Hawthorne Rail-Trailhead. Residents driving to the preserve can take State Road 20, turn south onto County Road 325, and travel one-half mile to County Road 2082. Parking is available at the Phifer Flatwoods Parking Area at the intersection of County Road 2082 and County Road 325. Walk or bike east on the Rail Trail one-half mile to the Marsh Trailhead or one mile to the Swamp Trailhead.

Alachua County will soon be sending out a press release inviting the public to the Phifer Flatwoods Grand Opening Celebration & Vine Cutting, which take place on October 11, 2008.

The preserve will be open daily from sunrise to sunset for hiking and biking on established paths.

For more information or for persons with disabilities who require assistance in accessing the site contact the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department Land Conservation Division 352-264-6800 or visit them online at www.alachuacountyforever.us.

CHOICES Health Education, Wellness, & Disease Management Kick-Off Event

A kickoff event for Alachua County’s CHOICES Health Education & Wellness and Disease Management Programs will be held October 22nd to introduce the programs to the community. Cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and illnesses related to smoking are the leading causes of mortality among Alachua County’s citizens. These diseases, and the risk factors associated with them - including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity - affect our lives in significant ways. Unfortunately, the prevalence of these illnesses has increased at an alarming rate in the past few years. These health issues are affecting our children and youth at higher rates than ever before, putting them at risk for even more serious problems in early to mid adulthood.

The good news? These diseases can be minimized or prevented through sensible lifestyle changes! A community-wide focus on improved nutrition and weight control, increased physical activity, and tobacco avoidance can reverse these disturbing trends.
On Wednesday, October 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can take part in free health screenings to evaluate some of your risk factors for many chronic diseases, including blood pressure, body fat percentage, and body mass index (BMI). There will also be fun events including a Poker Walk, dance lessons and demonstrations, 5-a-Day snacks, tips on living a healthier lifestyle, and drawings and prizes.  Find out more about free programs that can help you improve your health, like exercise, smoking cessation, and weight loss.

The kickoff event will be held downtown at the Sun Center, indoors and outdoors. Partners include the Alachua County Health Department, Gainesville Health and Fitness Center, and UF College of Nursing. More information about the CHOICES Health Education & Wellness Program can be found on our website: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/chdalachua/cardio/index.htm

Health Department Offers Flu Shots

The Alachua County Health Department (ACHD) urges citizens to get immunized against influenza.  It is expected that over 30,000 Americans will die from influenza and influenza related illnesses this year. “Getting a flu shot is one of the most important measures an individual can take to avoid getting the flu.  There is no anticipated shortage of vaccine this year.” stated Jean Munden, Administrator of the ACHD.  “Diligent hand washing and avoiding public exposure when ill are other actions citizens should exercise.”
The Alachua County Health Department began their Influenza (Flu) vaccine clinics on Thursday, October 2, 2008.  The vaccine will be available on a walk-in basis at the main health department site located at 224 SE 24th Street, Gainesville, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.  The vaccine will also be available by appointment only in the Alachua Clinic 386-462-2542 and the High Springs Clinic 386-454-2421. The Health Department will also have a limited supply of the Flu Mist available for those individuals 2 years through 49 years who medically qualify for the vaccine.

The cost for either the Flu shot or the Flu Mist will be $20 each.  For those with Medicare B, the Health Department will file for reimbursement as long as they receive a copy of their Medicare B card and any supplemental health insurance they may have and a photo ID.
To expedite your visit to the Health Department for a flu vaccine, we have added a Vaccine Administration Consent Form, the HIPPA information, as well as the Vaccine Information Statement on the inactivated flu vaccine to our web site.  You can reach the site by logging on to:  www.doh.state.fl.us/chdalachua/ or by Googling Alachua County Health Department.  For those who wish to receive the Flu Mist, we have forms in the office for you to read and complete upon your visit.
The health Department expects to receive their Vaccine for Children, [VFC] Influenza vaccine some time after the middle of the month of October.
The goal of the Alachua County Health Department is to promote, protect, maintain and improve the health and safety of all citizens and visitors.

Emergency Contact Information System

If you were involved in an accident and were unconscious, would law enforcement be able to locate your emergency contact person information? The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles maintains a database (D.A.V.I.D) with information on licensed Florida drivers and those who have a Florida ID card. This data includes a photo of the person, vehicles registered to them, their driving record, etc.  A few years ago, it became possible for drivers to add their emergency contact information to the database.  In the event of an emergency, law enforcement officers can access this information and contact family members or other loved ones quickly.  Over 1 million people have already entered their emergency contact information into D.A.V.I.D.
For more information or to add your emergency contact information into the database, go to http://www.flhsmv.gov/.  You will need your driver’s license or ID card number to register.
