Tuesday, August 30, 2011 3:15 PM

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - Alachua County’s CHOICES Health Education and Wellness Program is holding a Community Health Screening event on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. The event will be held at the Alachua County Health Department (224 SE 24th St., Gainesville). The free health screenings will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is part of the “Alachua County on the Move” health initiative. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the County’s high rates of death and disability from diabetes, heart disease and other preventable chronic diseases.

The event will feature activities and information to help citizens understand that the risks of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer can be reduced with simple lifestyle changes: increased activity, improved diet, avoiding tobacco and preventative health care. Free screenings will include blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, bone density, posture analysis, vision, hearing, body mass index, health risk assessments along with information on low or no cost STD, breast cancer and general cancer screening.
