January Environmental Horticulture Programs

tomatosALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental & Community Horticulture Programs for January, 2017. These programs are being offered by Dr. Denise DeBusk, Environmental & Community Horticulture Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Vegetable Gardening for Beginners – January 12, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Tower Road Branch Library (3020 SW 75th St, Gainesville, FL 32608)

Learn to start a vegetable garden using the square foot gardening technique. Bed construction, soil preparation, vegetables that can be grown, and pest control will be covered.

Landscaping for Newcomers – January 17, from 10 a.m. to noon

This class is geared to the new homeowner or newcomer to Alachua County. It focuses on Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles, as well as Alachua County ordinances and soil and weather conditions specific to Alachua County and Florida. Participants will receive a newcomer’s packet filled with information and water-saving devices.

Designing Your Edible Landscape– January 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Learn how you can incorporate edibles into your existing landscape, including fruit trees, vegetables, and herbs. Bring photos or a sketch of your current landscape.

This workshop is limited to 40 participants. Registration is $5.00 for class. Participants can register online (with an additional fee), or call 352-337-6209.

Vegetable Seed Workshop – January 31, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This workshop will provide information on growing seeds for vegetable gardens, as well as how to make an inexpensive seed light. Participants will plant seeds that will be ready for their warm-season garden, as well as take home additional seeds for direct seeding.

This workshop is limited to 30 participants. Registration is $15.00 for the class or $20.00 per couple. Participants can register online (with an additional fee), or call 352-337-6209.
