adoptable catAlachua County Animal Services is hosting their annual “Summer Lovin’” Adoption Event. The shelter is waiving all adoption fees on Saturday, August 17, 2019. For this event, they are extending the adoption hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Summer Lovin’ is organized with volunteer and promotional assistance from veterinary students with the University of Florida Student Chapter of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians. The goal of the event is to clear the shelter and make room for new animals.

Alachua County Animal Services takes adoption applications on a first-come, first-served basis. All pets available for adoption receive basic health exams and vaccinations. All dogs and cats adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter.

Pet adopters must be 18 or older and show ID with proof of current address. If there are already pets in the home, the potential adopter must show proof that owned animals are current on rabies shots and pet licenses. All dogs and cats available for adoption are examined, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped before leaving Animal Services.

“Summer is our busiest time of year, in regard to the number of animals at the shelter,” said Alachua County Animal Services Director Ed Williams. “Typically the summer is also slower for us in terms of adoptions. This event is a great opportunity for the community to come out and support their local shelter and adopt a new pet.”

Event organizer Taylor Burfeindt said, “The adopt-a-thon provides critical hands-on experience for veterinary students. We have a passion for animals and putting on this event gives us real-world shelter experience that we couldn’t otherwise get, all while helping Gainesville’s local municipal animal shelter.”
