April is Water Conservation Month

Thursday, March 27, 2014 11:00 AM
Ginnie SpringsALACHUA COUNTY, FL - Alachua County has joined numerous governments across Florida, declaring April as Water Conservation Month.  The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) is kicking off water conservation month with the Springs Celebration and Chili Cook Off at O’Leno State Park (410 S.E. O'Leno Park Road, High Springs) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014 (View the event flyer).  There will be music and children’s activities to create a celebratory atmosphere for learning about water conservation and springs.

“We depend on the aquifer for our drinking water, as do our springs, rivers, and lakes.  We all need to do our part to use less water every day.” said Stacie Greco Water Conservation Coordinator with the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department.  She continued, “The best way to leave more water for our springs and future generations is to replace thirsty landscapes with ones that can survive on rainfall alone once they are established.”

Native plants can be purchased at the “Go Native” Spring Plant Sale at the Morningside Nature Center (3540 E. University Avenue, Gainesville)  on April 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the Master Gardener Plant Sale on May 17, at the Extension Office from 8 a.m. to noon (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville).
