County Environmental Protection To Hold Two Pond Workshops

Monday, February 20, 2006 12:00 AM

The Alachua County Environmental Protection Department will hold two workshops on stormwater pond revegetation. The workshops are in partnership with Current Problems (Adopt A River), City of Gainesville, Gainesville Clean Water Partnership, and UF-IFAS.

Dr. Mark Clark, IFAS Extension Agent for Wetlands and Water Quality, will conduct both workshops. Both workshops are free, and lunch will be provided. While all people are welcome at either of the workshops, each of them will target a different audience.

The February 25 workshop will take place at the Matheson Museum, 513 E University Ave., Gainesville, at 9:00 a.m. and will be geared towards the general public. Neighborhood associations, homeowner associations, businesses, and interested individuals might prefer to attend this date. After the free lunch, the workshop will plant the Tumblin Basin at SW 6th Street and 5th Avenue.

The March 1 workshop take place at the Millhopper Branch Library, 3145 NW 43rd St., Gainesville, at 10:00 a.m. and will be targeting the building community—builders, developers, planners, engineers, landscape architects, consultants, etc. There will be more focus on design concepts at this workshop, with a tour of several ponds included after the free lunch. New approaches to stormwater ponds that have a greater emphasis on water quality, wildlife habitat, and ecological diversity as well as the new Land Development Regulations will be explored.

Advanced registration for the workshops is required. To register, please email Fritzi Olson at aar@currentproblems.org or call her at (352) 264-6827.
