ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - On August 27, 2010, the Florida Society of Certified Public Managers (FSCPM) presented the 2010 Florida Certified Public Managers’ Askew Award to a team headed by the Alachua County Office of Waste Collection.  The members of the winning team from Alachua County were: Christopher Drouillard, R. Samuel Sullivan, Milton Towns, Mary Ulseth, and Jeanne Chandler.

The Askew Award, presented annually, is designed to recognize an outstanding project by a team of Certified Public Manager (CPM) students which improves public service and demonstrates superior application of the principles and practices learned from the CPM program.  It is also designed to promote public awareness of the CPM program’s contribution towards the professional growth of public servants.

The winning team’s “Education First” approach to solid waste code enforcement focused on improving the process of educating and notifying citizens about code violations and potential penalties.

The Askew Award is chosen by a FSCPM committee of diverse managers from state and local agencies, plus a member from the previous year’s winning team.

The Alachua County team will represent Florida in competition for the national Askew Award, which is given by the American Academy of Certified Public Managers.

The Askew Award is named after George Askew, who was the first CPM graduate in the entire country. He served as the President of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Managers, and later as President of the American Academy of Certified Public Managers.
