County Will Operate Gatornationals Camping Area

Thursday, January 26, 2017 2:00 PM

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - At the Tuesday, January 24, 2017, Alachua County Commission Meeting, Alachua County staff was directed to operate an RV/primitive camping area during the 2017 Gatornationals.

For many years, the Jaycees, a non-profit organization, leased County owned property and ran this camping area as a fund-raising event. The Jaycees dissolved before the 2016 Gatornationals. For the benefit of longtime visitors to the County, County staff worked with a former member of the Jaycees, to keep the camping area opened for the 2016 Gatornationals. The proceeds went to another group outside of Alachua County. That group was notified via email on February 29, 2016, that this would be the final year for this arrangement.

As in the past, the RV/primitive camping area is located at CR 225 and N.E. 77th Avenue. Camping will be on a first come, first served basis. For those who have used this area in the past, it will be business as usual. County staff is meeting with long-time campers to ensure a seamless transition.

In addition to this site and the RV parking at the Gatornationals raceway itself, there is RV and tent camping available at the County Fairgrounds adjacent to the airport at 3100 N.E. 39th Avenue in Gainesville.

The National Hot Rod Association has also partnered with the Dixieland Music Park in Waldo to provide more camping availability.
