Veteran Services’ Great War Centennial Event

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Division of Veteran Services invites the community to the “Great War Centennial,” the 100th Anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I. The event is on Saturday, April 8, 2017, beginning at 11 a.m., at the Alachua County Veterans Memorial Park (7340 S.W. 41st Place, Gainesville). Attendees are welcome to bring a photo of their family member, friend, or loved one who served during World War I to show during the reception. This event is free and open to the public. There will be a reception with refreshments to follow the event program at the Freedom Center.

The ceremony includes

  • Arrival of the American Legion Riders (led by State Director of the American Legion Jim Day)
  • Presentation of Colors by the Vietnam Veterans of America Color Guard (led by Secretary of the Vietnam Veterans of America Fred Judkins)
  • The National Anthem (sung by Assistant County Manager Carl Smart)
  • An invocation (by Chaplin of the Vietnam Veterans of America Mr. Terry Koons)
  • A World War I POW/MIA accounting (by Chair of the Veteran Services Advisory Board Duane Romaine, and Director of Alachua County Veteran Services Kim Smith), Kim Smith will also speak about the Great War and those who served at the time
  • A Wreath Laying (by President of the Korean War Veterans of America Dr. William Kirby Stewart)
  • A Rifle Salute and Taps by the Korean War Veterans of America, (led by Sergeant at Arms Terry Fitzpatrick)


“As time goes by the service and sacrifices of those who served before us has not gone unremembered nor unappreciated,” said Veteran Services Director Kim Smith. “We will take this time to recognize the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I, and reflect on their courage, commitment, and sacrifice.”
