ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - Alachua County Waste Management announces new items that should be added to Alachua County/City of Gainesville curbside recycling bins.  Items now included in the recycling program include gable top cartons, aseptic cartons, and paperback books.

Gable top cartons are paper cartons used for such products as soy milk, juice and milk.  They are found in the refrigerated section.  Aseptic cartons are paper cartons which contain items such as juice and broth and are not refrigerated.  For recycling, place these items in the blue bins used for other plastics, glass and metals.

In addition to recycling junk mail, magazines, office paper, catalogs, newspapers, phone books and clean cardboard (3’ x 3’ flattened), paper recyclables now include paperback books, coupon books, and school workbooks that are not bound by a hardcover or plastic binder.  These items are placed in the orange bins.  Alachua County Waste Management recommends donating or reusing items whenever possible.

Waste Alternatives Specialist, Carol Davis said, “Recycling and diverting waste from the landfill is important in Alachua County.”  She continued, “In 2010, the State of Florida mandated a 75% recycling goal for all counties by the year 2020.  Alachua County is currently at 49%, and with your help, we can reach 75%.”
