September Environmental and Community Horticulture Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental and Community Horticulture Programs for September 2018. These programs are being offered by the Alachua County Master Gardeners.

Growing Flowers from Bulbs – September 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Newberry Library Branch (110 S. Seaboard Dr., Newberry) by Lois McNamara, Master Gardener

Popular southern flowers that grow from bulbs include Cannas, Crinum Lilies, Amaryllis, Caladiums, Rain Lilies, and Agapanthus. This presentation begins with a review of how to be successful with the most reliable bulbs, and covers some lesser-known bulbs including dahlias, gingers, Watsonia, and lilies.

The workshop is free, but participants must register by calling 352-337-6209 (voicemail). It is limited to 40 participants.

Cool Season Vegetable Gardening – September 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Ave., Gainesville) by Doug Collins, Master Gardener

This class teaches which plants grow in colder weather, and how to grow them. Cabbage, kale, broccoli, and different greens are covered.

Participants must register online. The registration fee is $10.00 and includes course material and supplies. Limited to 50 participants. There are no refunds for registration fees.
