Alachua County Forever Preserve Preview Hike at Black Lake Preserve

Alachua County invites the community to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Alachua County Forever land conservation program with a guided hike and preserve preview at Black Lake Preserve (6197 NE 225th St., Melrose).

The hike is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Black Lake Preserve has not yet been officially opened to the public, and this hike will offer a glimpse into the preserve ahead of its planned public opening in 2026.

The hike begins at the future Trail trailhead for Black Lake Preserve. From there, hikers will traverse through Mesic flatwoods and near a basin swamp. Participants will learn about plants and animals found in these communities, as well as the Alachua County Forever program. This 1-mile loop hike is on relatively level ground but may have muddy or sandy spots. Restroom facilities are not available.

Visitors are advised to bring comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, sun protection and drinking water.

“This year marks the 25th anniversary of the creation of Alachua County Forever, the county’s land conservation program,” said Alachua County Land Conservation Program Manager Andi Christman. “We’re excited to be offering a series of field trips and events this fall in preparation for our anniversary celebration in December.”
