The Alachua County Household Hazardous Waste Department, in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Bradford County Commission will sponsor a free “Toxic Round-Up” collection event to properly dispose of and recycle common household waste items that cannot be collected curbside. Residents can bring hazardous waste items to the Bradford County Courthouse parking lot (945 N. Temple Avenue, Starke) on Saturday, February 15, 2020, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
All Bradford County residents and small businesses are welcome. The event is free for residents, however, the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department must assess small businesses a nominal fee for eligible quantities of all aforementioned waste items. Small businesses may contact 352-334-0440 for more information about associated fees and program availability.
Household hazardous waste can be toxic to the public and pose a threat to our environment if improperly discarded. In 2019, 1.83 tons of waste (3,664 pounds) was collected and neutralized in Bradford County alone. An estimated 80% of that was from the Toxic Round-Up event.
Items that will be accepted include:
- Aerosol cans
- Antifreeze
- Automotive fluids – brake fluid, automatic transmission fluid, lubricants, etc.
- Batteries – automotive batteries, lead-acid, Ni-Cd, rechargeable, etc.
- E-Waste – computers, TVs, microwaves, radios, and other electronic waste
- Fluorescent lamps and tubes, CFL and LED bulbs
- Household cleaners, degreasers, and solvents
- Fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides (solid or liquid)
- Paint, paint thinner, and other waste paint-related materials
- Propane tanks
- Fire extinguishers
- Non-controlled pharmaceuticals (pills and liquid) and over-the-counter medications
- Gasoline, fuels
- Used oil and used oil filters
- Shop rags and absorbents
- Flares and ammunition
- Used vegetable oil
For your safety: All containers must be labeled. Please use a tub or tarp to contain any potential spills in vehicles. If at all possible, please drive only with a well-ventilated cab and the windows open.
NOTICE: Trash and recyclables will not be accepted at the Toxic Round-Up events. Explosives, reactives, and radioactive, infectious, or biohazardous wastes, including sharps (syringes, needles, and lancets) will not be accepted at the Toxic Round-Up events.
