Commission Provides $200K for Food Assistance Amid SNAP Delays

In recognition of the rising food insecurity facing thousands of residents across our community due to the ongoing federal government shutdown and the interruption of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, the Alachua County Commission is taking action to provide support.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the commission approved a combined $200,000 to support local families in need. The Bread of the Mighty Food Bank will receive half the funding to bolster its food distribution efforts. At the same time, the other half will support other local organizations that will help ensure residents maintain access to fresh, healthy and affordable food options.

Details about the specific distribution of food by these organizations are being finalized and will be shared with the public as soon as they are available.

“We know that access to nutritious food is fundamental to the health and well-being of our families and our community,” said Commission Chair Ken Cornell. “With this investment, we are sending a clear message: no one in Alachua County should go hungry.”

Additionally, the commission has requested matching support from the City of Gainesville and the Children’s Trust of Alachua County to maximize the impact of local resources for the nearly 32,000 residents who receive SNAP benefits.

County staff will return to the commission in December with further recommendations to provide food assistance to residents in need.
