Food Assistance for Families
The commission approved a combined $200,000 for food assistance for families in need while SNAP benefits are delayed.
The Bread of the Mighty Food Bank will receive half the funding to bolster its food distribution efforts. At the same time, the other half will support other local organizations that will help ensure residents maintain access to fresh, healthy and affordable food options.
Details about the specific distribution of food by these organizations are being finalized and will be shared with the public as soon as they are available.
Additionally, the commission requested matching support from the City of Gainesville and the Children’s Trust of Alachua County to maximize the impact of local resources for the nearly 32,000 residents who receive SNAP benefits.
County staff will return to the commission in December with further recommendations to provide food assistance to residents in need.
