Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony

The Alachua County Community Remembrance Project (ACCRP), in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) of Montgomery, Alabama, is proud to announce a Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, at noon. The ceremony is at Monteocha Park (803 NW 192nd Ave., Gainesville). The event is free and open to the public. We invite everyone to join in this important commemoration. Refreshments will be served. Stephanie Wylie, an Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) representative, will be present at the event.

This ceremony is a significant step in the work of the ACCRP, which is dedicated to truth and reconciliation surrounding the history of racial terrorism and lynching in Alachua County during the Jim Crow era. The marker honors the legacy of Moses Smith, an activist who advocated for Black voting rights and tragically lost his life to racial violence on Nov. 1, 1868, just before an election.

By confronting the truths of our shared past, the community can initiate a healing process and work towards a more equitable future for all.
