ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Environmental Protection Department (EPD) is recognizing businesses in the region that take action to protect water resources. The first business to be recognized is Scrubs Carwash (3135 SW 42nd St, Gainesville).  Scrubs will be acknowledged at the April 23, 2013, Board of County Commissioners Regular Meeting, and is spotlighted on the EPD website.

Scrubs Carwash has become a WaterSavers® businesss, and has retrofitted their facility to greatly reduce water use. They have installed high pressure nozzles that reduce water use by 40% (to under 40 gallons per wash) in their automatic wash stations.  Their self-serve stations use roughly 3 gallons/minute, compared to the 9-17 gallons/minute used when washing a car at a typical home.

Owners Chris Koenig and Mike Wasik are currently working on retrofits to allow them to use rainwater collected from the roof.  Additionally, all of their chemicals are biodegradable and are disposed of responsibly.

Gus Olmos, Water Resources Supervisor explained, “Scrubs has been a good steward of the environment for a long time.” He continued, “They offer Wash Bucks to charities so these organizations can raise money by selling tokens for car washes; instead of holding car washes in parking lots that end up polluting our local creeks and lakes with soapy pollutant laden wash water.”
