April Family and Consumer Sciences Programs

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Family and Consumer Sciences Programs for April, 2014. These programs are being offered by Brenda C. Williams, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Growing and Healthy Cooking with Herbs (with Wendy Wilber, Environmental Horticulture Agent) – April 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Learn how to grow culinary herbs in containers and in the garden. There will be demonstrations of techniques on using herbs to enhance foods. Taste samples will be provided. Directions for making flavored vinegars that are ideal for gift-giving will also be demonstrated.

Cost is $3.00, payable at the door.

Canning Workshop – April 7, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and repeated from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (at the Extension Office). The workshop will repeat again on April 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., High Springs Public Library Branch (135 N.W. 1st Avenue, High Springs)

Basic information on canning foods using the steam pressure canner or boiling-water canner. Directions and tips will also be included on making jams, jellies and pickles.

There is no fee; printed materials will be available for $3.00 per set.
