May Agriculture & Natural Resources Programs

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Agriculture & Natural Resources Programs for May, 2014.  These programs are being offered by Barton Wilder, Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Rural Energy Workshop – May 29, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Solar power and other sustainable energy sources for farms and homes will be covered.  Topics will include: solar power systems for agriculture and residential use as well as the economics of solar power. 

There is no cost to attend this workshop (dinner will be provided).

2nd Annual Northeast Florida Livestock Agents Group Equine Workshop – May 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., IFAS Horse Teaching Unit (1934 SW 63 Avenue, Gainesville)

There will be sessions for beginning and advanced horse owners.  The beginning sessions will cover horse nutrition, hoof care, and the economics of horse ownership.  The advanced sessions will cover horse rations, hay quality, and legal liability for horse owners.   Identification and control of toxic weeds will be taught after both sessions.  Our two keynote speakers are:  Dr. Amanda House and Dr. Toots Banner.  Dr. House, Clinical Associate Professor at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine, will be discussing strategic deworming for horses.  Dr. Toots Banner, Large Animal Veterinarian, will be discussing equine dentistry.

There is no cost to attend this workshop (lunch will be provided).
