ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - County Commissioner Cynthia Chestnut has been invited to take part in the Southern Women Leadership Summit in May, 2008 in St. Simons Island, Georgia.  The stated goal of this gathering of 160 women leaders from throughout the South is to explore the role of women in restoring public trust and confidence in public service and in lifting up the next generation of women leaders.

The Summit is organized by The Stennis Center for Public Service, a federal, legislative branch agency created by Congress in 1988 to promote and strengthen public service leadership in America.  The Summit is an outgrowth of a conference the Stennis Center has conducted for the last 17 years focused on bringing more women into public service leadership and encouraging and enabling women leaders to advance at all levels of government.

The Summit differs from the past conferences in that women leaders are invited to come together in small groups and in plenary sessions to explore key challenges facing women in public service.  All of the 160 women leaders invited to take part in the Summit will be active participants working together to find solutions rather than attendees listening to others speak. The Summit will use dialogue as a tool for learning from each other as the themes of the Summit are explored.
