Flood Safety Awareness Week

Monday, March 17, 2008 1:00 AM

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL -  Florida has been experiencing drought conditions for the past two years.  In spite of this, recent severe weather events have caused extensive river and area flooding across the State. Alachua County citizens should prepare for flooding. National Flood Safety Awareness Week is March 17, 2008 through March 21, 2008. The National Weather Service and Emergency Management officials encourage residents to review their insurance policies and family disaster plans during this time.

According to the National Weather Service, flooding causes more deaths and property damage than any other weather related hazard. The simple phrase, "Turn Around, Don't Drown" can save many lives. More information on the "Turn Around, Don't Drown" program is available at: http://www.weather.gov/os/water/tadd/tadd-intro.shtml

Two of the most important things needed to protect a family's home or business is to have an emergency plan and purchase a Federal flood insurance policy. The typical homeowner's insurance policy does not cover floods. To learn more about the local flood risk and flood insurance go to: http://www.alachuacounty.us/government/depts/fr/em/flood/
