ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - An opening reception for the Survivors' Art Exhibit will take place Friday, May 16, 2008, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. in the gallery of the J. Wayne Reitz Union at the University of Florida.  The art exhibit is free and open to the general public and will be displayed in the gallery May 11-23.  The exhibit is sponsored by the Alachua County Victim Services and Rape Crisis Center, the Sexual Battery Committee of the Gainesville Commission on the Status of Women, the UF Counseling Center, and the UF Arts and Crafts Center.

In its twelfth year, the Survivors' Art Exhibit is a unique event that underscores survivors' journeys from initial victimization to resolution.  Through a variety of media such as painting, drawing, watercolor, photography, poetry and sculpture, survivors create personal stories of domestic violence, family violence, sexual abuse, sexual assault, child abuse, spiritual abuse and other forms of interpersonal violence.

Both female and male artists in the community and on campus, who are survivors of interpersonal violence, and who have used art in their healing process, will share their work. Over 375 artists have participated in the show over the past twelve years.

The Sexual Battery Committee sponsors the exhibit in conjunction with its 27th Annual Conference, "Pathways to Healing: From Trauma to Recovery," to be held Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Trinity United Methodist Church.

The J. Wayne Reitz Union gallery hours are Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Friday - Sunday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
