FAC Presidential Scholarship

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Board of County Commissioners, during their June 9, 2009 Regular Meeting, will present the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) Presidential Scholarship to Michael Bird.

This award recognizes an outstanding high school senior who shows promise of continuing academic achievement to prepare for a career in public service. Michael is the son of Alachua County Environmental Protection Director Chris Bird.

The $1,500 scholarship is for children of Board of County Commissioner employees of the incoming 2009-10 President of the Florida Association of Counties, Rodney J. Long.

Michael Bird is a 2009 graduate of Gainesville High School. Michael is a National Merit Scholar and a recipient of the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) Brilliance in USA Award. During his senior year of high school, he was Captain of the Men's Varsity Soccer Team, President of Students Teaching Open-Mindedness and Pride (STOMP), President of the Young Democrats Club and Students for Obama.

Michael plans to attend Middlebury College in Vermont. In 1823, Alexander Twilight graduated from Middlebury College, the first African-American to earn a degree at an American college or university.
