Upcoming Gardening Classes

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Extension Office is pleased to offer the following free gardening classes in October 2009. All classes are presented by Wendy Wilber, Environmental Horticulture Agent at either: the Alachua County Extension Office (2800 NE 39th Ave., Gainesville), or the Tower Road Branch Library (3020 SW 75th Street, Gainesville).

  • Rainbarrel Workshop - October 10, 1 p.m. (at the Alachua County Extension Office). Learn how to make a homemade rainbarrel that will help you collect water for your garden. The workshop costs $30.00, to cover materials. Pay and register in advance.
  • Weeds in Lawn & Landscape - October 14, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (at the Alachua County Extension Office). Learn to identify and control lawn weeds like crab grass and dove weed, and landscape weeds such as Florida betony. This class will also go over invasive plants like air potato, ardesia and Chinese tallow. Learn what you can do about them.

  • Perennials for Your Landscape & Butterfly Garden - October 28, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (at the Alachua County Extension Office). This class will teach you to select great perennials to attract butterflies and caterpillars into your landscape.
