Health Officials Lift Eastern Equine Encephalitis Medical Advisory

Thursday, December 29, 2005 12:00 AM

Over the past several weeks, the mosquito activity in Alachua County has diminished, and with it the identification of the predominate arboviruses- Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV) in bird flocks. County Health Officer Tom Belcuore has lifted the medical advisory that has been in place since early fall.

While the advisory has been lifted, and the colder temperatures have reduced mosquito activity, health officials continue to warn against complacency. Belcuore stated;” While we are in a period of diminished activity, mosquitoes are essentially a year round issue for Florida and Alachua County . We continue to promote the essentials of prevention.”

Health officials wish to remind all citizens that the “ 5 D's ” of disease prevention:

  1. Dusk and Dawn- the prime times for mosquito feeding
  2. Dress- if out at these times, wear barrier precautions, such as long sleeve shirts and pants
  3. DEET- use mosquito repellants such as DEET or now additional products approved for use. Use according to manufacturer directions
  4. Drains- prevent mosquito breeding near your home by eliminating standing water in gutters, flower pots, wading pools-virtually any amount of water can breed mosquitoes.
