February Family and Consumer Sciences Programs

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Family and Consumer Sciences Programs for February, 2015. These programs are being offered by Brenda C. Williams, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 NE 39th Avenue, Gainesville).

Equipping Your Financial Toolbox (3-part series) – February 9, 16, and 23, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This 3-part series offers advice on planning a sound financial future. The classes are held on three consecutive Mondays, and will cover the following:

Session 1 – Monday, February 9
Important Papers – Topics include organizing important papers: what to keep and for how long, preparing a household inventory, net worth statement, and building a spending plan.

Session 2 – Monday, February 16
Managing Your Finances and Making Credit Work for You - This session is designed for those who want to review the components of credit scores, understand the credit laws, and get their finances under better control. Young couples and college students are invited as well as any who wish to attend.

Session 3 – February 23
Basic Estate Planning - Topics include wills, living wills, and surrogate designation for healthcare. This session is especially encouraged for parents with minor aged children.

There is no cost to attend this class, space is limited. Pre-register at least 3 days prior to class by calling 352-337-6209 (voice mail).

First Time Home Buyers Education Program (3-part series) – February 11, 18, and 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This 3-part series offers resources that can help with buying, maintaining and keeping a home.  Upon completion of this program, participants will receive a certificate of attendance. The classes are held on three consecutive Wednesdays, and will cover the following:

Session 1 – Wednesday, February 11
Information on getting your budget and credit worthiness in line, determining how much house can be afforded, and understanding the responsibilities and costs of being a responsible homeowner.

Session 2 – Wednesday, February 18
Understanding the sales contract, home inspections, mortgage process, selecting homeowners insurance, warranties, and the closing process.

Session 3 – Wednesday, February 25
Time will be given for questions, and participants will have an opportunity to get valuable tips from those involved in the process of buying a home.

The cost for the entire series is $10.00 per individual or couple.

French Cooking Class – February 21 & 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Charmes de la France, and the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office are hosting a French cooking class showcasing seasonal delights from French regional cuisine. Run by French Chef Michel Maloiseau, the cooking classes include step-by-step recipes that are followed by tasting sessions. Brenda Williams will provide nutrition comments during the program. The classes can fit up to 25 people, and reservations must be made on the Charmes de la France website. The class fee is $45.00 per person and must be paid in advance.
