ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - Alachua County Emergency Management is enrolling citizens for its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program. The seven classes are free, and are held on Tuesday evenings beginning July 7, 2015 and running through August 18, 2015. Each session runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Classes are held at the Alachua County Emergency Operations Center (1100 S.E. 27th Street, Gainesville). Registration deadline is July 3, 2015.  The minimum class size is 15, otherwise the class will be cancelled.

Speaking on the classes, Alachua County Emergency Management Coordinator Ebbin A. Spellman said, “We are in the middle of hurricane season, but we can be impacted by other incidents such as wildfires, extreme weather, and manmade and technological hazards to name a few. The Alachua County Division of Emergency Management recognizes that preparedness is vital. There’s no better way to get prepared for disasters than to attend the CERT Course. CERT teaches citizens how to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters.”

The seven week class covers the following topics:
· Disaster Preparedness
· Fire Safety
· Disaster Medical Operations
· Light Search and Rescue Operations
· CERT Organization and Disaster Psychology
· Terrorism and CERT

If you miss the deadline, or can’t make it to the classes listed above, the next scheduled CERT Course will begin October 6, 2015.
