This press release put out at the request of the Alachua County Health Department

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL – The Florida Department of Health in Alachua County (FDOH-Alachua) asks residents to ensure that swimming pools, neglected during winter months, are not breeding mosquitos.

FDOH-Alachua would also like to remind citizens and visitors of the importance of protection with the following tips:

  • Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water; just a bottle cap of water is all they need.
  • Drain, refresh, or cover anything around buildings that can hold water, at least weekly, and put away outside items when not in use.
  • Keep mosquitos outside by shutting doors and covering windows with screens.
  • People should use EPA approved insect repellants anytime they are outdoors.
  • Cover skin with long sleeves and pants.

“Mosquitoes will bite, day and night, so it is important to protect yourself,” said Anthony Dennis, Environmental Health Director, Florida Department of Health in Alachua County.

FDOH-Alachua and local mosquito control continue surveillance and prevention efforts throughout the county.

Report mosquito problems to your municipality’s mosquito control or the Florida Department of Health in Alachua County at 352-334-7930.
