October Environmental Horticulture Programs

raised bedALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental Horticulture Programs for October 2016. These programs are being offered by Dr. Denise DeBusk, Environmental & Community Horticulture Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville), unless otherwise noted.

Growing Cool Season Vegetables – October 6, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Cabbage, kale, broccoli and different greens and how to grow them are covered in this class about fall and winter gardening.
Registration is $5.00 for the class. Register online (with an additional fee), or call 352-337-6209.

Fall and Winter Gardening – October 16, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Archer Branch Library (13266 FL-45, Archer). This class is taught by Master Gardener Ronald Bertie.

This class is a basic course on how to prepare plants in the fall, protect them from the cold (to survive the cold temperatures), and continue to grow as warmer weather arrives.

Landscaping for Newcomers – October 24, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and repeated on October 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This class is geared toward new homeowners or newcomers to Alachua County. It focuses on Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles, as well as Alachua County ordinances and soil and weather conditions specific to Alachua County and Florida. Participants receive a newcomer’s packet with information and water-saving devices.

There is no cost to attend these classes, unless indicated, but space is limited. Register at least three days before the class by calling 352-337-6209 (voice mail).
