Public Workshop on Alachua County Public School Concurrency

Tuesday, March 28, 2006 12:00 AM

There will be a public workshop on School Concurrency in Alachua County on Thursday, March 30 at 5 p.m. in the Boardroom of the Kirby-Smith Building, 620 E. University Avenue. This is the second of two scheduled public workshops to keep the public informed on the process for updating the Interlocal Agreement for Public School Facility Planning and to receive any input that members of the public want to provide as it relates to the Interlocal Agreement as well as the overall goal of implementing school concurrency in Alachua County.

School Concurrency is the requirement that school facilities that are needed to serve new residential development be in place prior to or concurrent with the impacts of the development.

The Interlocal Agreement for Public School Facility Planning is an agreement among Alachua County, the School Board of Alachua County, and the nine municipalities within the County. The agreement provides a framework for the County, Cities and School Board to coordinate land use planning and public school facilities planning. The School Board of Alachua County serves as the Lead Agency in the interlocal agreement update process. This effort will culminate in the adoption of an updated interlocal agreement by September 2006.

The next phase of the process will be amendments to each local government’s comprehensive land use plan, in coordination with the School Board, to include provisions to implement public school concurrency as mandated by law. Those comprehensive plan amendments are to be adopted by July 2008.

For more information, citizens can contact Terry Tougaw at the School Board at (352) 955-7591.
