FGP Blanket Project

Tuesday, January 17, 2012 12:15 PM

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - On January 20, 2012, the Alachua County Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) will participate in the National MLK Day of Service. 100 foster grandparent volunteers, all age 55 and over, are making double-layered fleece blankets for distribution by the Gainesville Housing Authority and School Board of Alachua County’s Homeless Education Office to the area's homeless families and children.

According to Courtney Allen, Homeless Education Coordinator for the School Board of Alachua County, the blankets will be given to students who are not in the physical custody of their parents and are living from place to place with other people and even in places not deemed for housing. “Because of the volatile nature of their situation, and the many shifts that occur, receiving a blanket can mean many things. Having someone to give you something and thus, recognize your need is priceless to them.  Receiving a blanket will mean having something to call their own. It will mean warmth for the night; thus, a sense of comfort and security.”

This is the second year the Foster Grandparents will complete this project, and their goal is to make 30 blankets.

"Dr. King devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice, and opportunity for all, and taught us that everyone has a role to play in making America what it ought to be. By serving today and throughout the year, we honor Dr. King and help realize his dream of equality and opportunity for all." said Norma Berger, Alachua County FGP Coordinator. She added, "Organizers of the National MLK Day of Service see participation as the perfect opportunity for Americans to remember Dr. King's life and legacy and to honor him by taking action to solve problems in their communities."
