Memorial Day Program

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - On Monday, May 28, 2012, Alachua County and the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health Care System will hold the Annual Memorial Day Program. The service will be hosted by and conducted at the Forest Meadows Cemetery (3700 SE Hawthorne Road, Gainesville). The program begins at 10 a.m., and the public is invited to attend.

The theme for this year’s honor is the recognition of collegiate veterans. The guest speaker is Dr. Jackson Sasser, President of Santa Fe College. The ceremony includes: a presentation of colors by the Young Marines, greetings from Congressman Cliff Stearns and Sheriff Sadie Darnell, reading of proclamations by County Commissioner Lee Pinkoson and Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe, a rifle salute by the Korean War Veterans Chapter 267 and other special music and honors, wreath placements and the sounding of Taps. 

Immediately following the ceremony there is a free barbecue luncheon provided by the Forest Meadow Cemetery, owners: Jon C. Thomas Family.
