April is Fair Housing Month

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Equal Opportunity Office informs residents that April is Fair Housing Month. The Alachua County Fair Housing Ordinance prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, disability, sex, marital status, age or familial status in the sale or rental of housing.

Examples of unlawful and discriminatory housing practices include:

  • To deny a loan or discriminate in the terms of a transaction
  • To deny housing or represent that housing is unavailable when it is
  • To refuse to engage in a real estate transaction or refuse a bona fide offer
  • To steer any person away from or to housing
  • To prohibit a person with a disability from making reasonable modifications at their expense (e.g. installing grab bars or ramps) to their apartment
