September Environmental Horticultural Programs

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Cooperative Extension Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental Horticulture Programs for September, 2012. These programs are being offered by Wendy Wilber, Environmental Horticulture Agent at the Extension Office (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Raised Bed Vegetable Gardening – September 12, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This workshop will show what crops will grow in a fall garden and about the efficient technique of growing vegetables in raised beds.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Tour – September 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning at the UF Straughn Development Center (2142 Shealy Drive, Gainesville).

The Alachua County Master Gardeners will be offering a tour of Florida-Friendly Landscapes™ in the Gainesville area. These yards exemplify water conservation and environmentally friendly landscaping practices. The event starts at the UF Straughn Development Center, 2142 Shealy Drive, beginning with a gardening talk and onsite tour.

Participants will leave for tours of four local landscapes and maps will be provided. These landscape sites will have Alachua County Master Gardener volunteers as guides.

Tough Plants for Tough Places – September 19, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Florida-Friendly™ plants thrive under difficult conditions. Learn how to incorporate these selections into your low maintenance landscape.

Growing Citrus – September 26, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This workshop will cover selection, fertilizing, trouble shooting and cold protection for backyard citrus plants.

There is no charge for any of these programs. Space is limited so pre-registration is recommended by calling 352-337-6209.
