2009 4-H Summer Day Camps

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Extension Office is pleased to announce the schedule for the 2009 4-H Summer Day Camp Season. These camps offer something for youth of all ages and a variety of interesting subjects.

All day camps will begin at the Extension Office (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville), except the Shooting Sports day camp.

Day Camp Schedule:

  • ATV Safety: June 9th, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., ages 7 - 16, cost: $5. Bring your own lunch (snacks provided). Learn ATV safety knowledge and skill in a fun, safe, fast paced classroom atmosphere.  There is no ATV riding in these workshops. This is NOT the ASI ATV Certification course for youth.
  • Paper Craft Day Camp: June 9th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., ages 8 - 11, cost: $7. Bring your own lunch (snacks provided). Come learn the beautiful and fairly easy technique of 'Iris Folding'. We will make beautiful paper cards and pictures, suitable for framing and exhibiting in fairs.
  • Crafty Kids Day Camp: June 12th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., ages 8 - 18, cost: $15. Come join us for our annual round robin of quick and easy summer crafts. Kids will complete and take home 18-20 different craft projects ranging from fun recyclable crafts to food crafts and more. Cost covers materials for crafts, activities, snacks and drinks.
  • Sewing Day Camp: June 15th - 18th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., ages 8 - 18, cost: $40. Bring your own lunch (snacks provided). Learn how to sew a series of fun projects that will lead up to using and following a pattern. A working sewing machine is needed along with basic sewing kit. Parent participation is encouraged.
  • City Slickers: June 22nd - 24th, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., ages 10 - 15, cost: $5. This tour will give youth an opportunity to see Alachua County Agriculture. Youth will tour beef cattle operations, horse farms, nurseries & greenhouses, vegetable farms, packing sheds and more. Alachua County has about 200,000 acres in Agricultural production, so come with us and see what all is grown here.
  •  Macrame, Crochet & Beading (An intergenerational & Cultural Arts Day Camp): July 7th - 9th, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., ages 10 - 18, cost: $5. Participants will learn basic knots of macrame and basic stitches for crochet.  Beaded bracelets will also be taught in-between.  Finger dexterity is one of the benefits of such skills. (Don't let the name fool you, boys are very good at these skills and are invited to join the camp!)
  • Fishing Day Camp: July 8th - 10th, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., ages 8 - 14, cost: $5. Activities include catch and release fishing at the IFAS Fisheries center, fish t-shirt making, fish dissection and salt water fishing in Cedar Key.
  • Junior Master Gardener Day Camp: July 21st - 24th, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., ages 6 - 8, cost: $30. Snack provided. Children will experience the wonders of composting, vermiculture and recycling for organic gardening.  Butterfly gardening shows how different plants attract wildlife to your yard. Also learn about plant propagation.
  •  Shooting Sports Day Camp: August 10th - 14th, time TBA, ages 12 - 18, Participants will learn proper gun safety, handling, and skeet shooting in a supervised environment. Beginners welcome. Shotguns provided. This camp will be held at Gator Skeet & Trap, 5202 NE 46 Avenue, Gainesville www.gatorskeetandtrap.com.
