Animal Services Dog Quarantine Notice

Wednesday, February 24, 2016 4:45 PM

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - Today, February 24, 2016, Alachua County Animal Services (ACAS) discovered six dogs in our kennel population that have contracted one or both of the following: streptococcus zooepidemicus, commonly called ‘strep zoo’ and canine pneumovirus. Strep zoo is a bacterial infection that mainly transfers dog to dog, but can cross species barriers and infect other animals and humans. Canine pneumovirus is a virus that is specific to dogs only.

ACAS is currently taking active measures to treat the animals that are exhibiting symptoms and prevent the further spread of disease to the remainder of the shelter population. In an effort to manage this situation our dog population will be on quarantine for a 10 day period.

We are asking the public to refrain from surrendering their owned dogs until further notice. If you find a stray dog please contact us for further information and housing options.
