Day Seven of World Masters Athletics Shows Test of Endurance

On Saturday morning, all eyes at Celebration Pointe focused on the Men’s and Women’s Outdoor 10K Run. The U.S.’s Joseph Gray and Great Britain’s Ellie Stevens dominated the field en route to gold. Gray’s time of 31:06 bested Italy’s Umberto Persi by 16 seconds. Spain’s Ignacio Garcia Ramon won bronze.

Stevens’ time of 35:29 was 21 seconds ahead of the U.S.’s Katie Sherron, who took silver, with April Lund wearing Bronze.

“I felt really good the whole race,” said Gray. “You try to set a strong pace and get into a rhythm. Road races are all different so you can’t focus on time, you just have to focus on you and the race you want to run.”

The 10K was Stevens’ first gold of the day. She also claimed the Women’s 1500m (40-44) category with a championship record time 4:37.19. In total, she earned four gold medals and set two championship records.

“This is amazing,” said Stevens. “I’ve been so focused on the track, but back out on the road is where I feel the most comfortable. I enjoyed the course and being able to see everybody.”

The U.S.’s Flo Meiler continued her record-breaking week. She picked up her fourth championship record in the Women’s Pole Vault (90-94). No woman of Meiler’s age has attempted to pole vault in the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships.

In Women’s Shot Put (90-94), Meiler’s throw of 5.18m set a new mark, giving her a sixth gold medal of the week. Lithuania also picked up gold in Women’s Shot Put (75-79), as Genovaite Kazlauskiene set a new record with a throw of 10.67m. Mexico, Canada, Mongolia and the U.S. also claimed gold in Women’s Shot Put.

The Czech Republic and the U.S. won gold in the Weight Throw (50-54) (55-59).

In Indoor Jumps, several more championship records were set.

In the Women’s Pole Vault, (70-74), (75-79) and (80-84) categories Kay Glynn, from the U.S., set a new mark at 2.70m. Australia’s Wilma Perkins set a record at 1.50m. Catherine Radle, also from the U.S., set a record at 1.60m.

In the Men’s Long Jump (80-84), Germany’s Eberhard Linke set a championship record with a jump of 4.24m. In the Men’s and Women’s Triple Jump, the U.S., Sweden, Germany and Poland earned medals.

The Women’s 1500m Finals also saw women from Great Britain set two more championship records. Sarah Roberts (75-79) with a time of 6:02.35 and Clare Elms (60-64) at 5:14.00. Zoe Doyle (45-49) of the United Kingdom also won gold with a time of 4:45.55. The U.S., Uruguay and Poland also took home gold.

The Men’s 1500m finals also saw several world records broken in different age categories. Jean-Louis Esnault (85-89), of France, ran a 6:08.47 to set the record. Symes (55-59), of Great Britain, set a record at 4:21.42. David Clark, from the U.S., set a record with a time of 3:56.51. Six more countries also found themselves atop the podium, including Ireland, Netherlands, Uruguay, Canada, Italy and Saudi Arabia.

At West End, the Outdoor Throws saw seven different nations win gold in Javelin, Discus and Hammer. The U.S. led the way with two. Canada, Austria, Australia, Denmark, Germany and Mexico also stood atop the podium. U.S. athletes swept both Men’s Javelin in the (65-69) and (70-74) categories.

Nine countries won silver and bronze, including the U.S., Australia, Great Britain, Chile, Peru, Lithuania, Germany, Canada and Venezuela.
