Land conservation projects

The commission approved an option contract and for staff to execute any documents necessary to purchase a conservation easement for the 95.88-acre Watermelon Pond-Biro parcel located in Archer, near the Alachua-Levy County line.

The $359,550 purchase will be funded by the voter-approved Wild Spaces Public Places surtax. The purchase ensures the protection of surface and groundwater and the recharge to the Floridian Aquifer, as well as the protection of unique and fragile natural areas and rare species habitats, specifically sandhill, xeric hammock and scrub.
