Alachua County invites residents to celebrate Florida’s Arbor Day, January 17, 2020, by planting trees at Cellon Oak Park (4100 N.W. 169th Place, La Crosse). The tree planting is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cellon Oak Park is home to Florida’s Co-Champion Southern Live Oak Tree.
Participants will learn the latest techniques for properly planting trees. They will also learn about important trees in the community, and how they can help renew the local tree canopy.
Arbor Day originated in 1872, when Sterling Morton of Nebraska City, Nebraska, organized the planting of one million trees. Since that time, Arbor Day has spread to thousands of communities all across America and the globe. The celebration recognizes and supports the planting of trees.
“Our trees are among Alachua County's greatest assets,” said Alachua County Parks and Conservation Director Charlie Houder. “They add to the beauty and character of our communities while providing numerous environmental benefits. Arbor Day is a great time to pause and say thanks. The planting of new trees now helps ensure that future generations will share in these benefits.”
