February Commercial Horticulture Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Commercial Horticulture programs for February 2024. These programs are being offered by Dr. Tatiana Sanchez-Jones, a Commercial Horticulture agent.

Green Industries Best Management Practices (GIBMP) – Feb. 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Alachua County Ag Auditorium (22716 W. Newberry Road, Newberry).

Florida law states that all commercial fertilizer applicators must have a certificate from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences (FDACS). To get this certificate, each commercial applicator must be trained in Green Industries - Best Management Practices (GI-BMP) and receive a certificate of completion from UF/IFAS and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. This class begins at 8:30 a.m.

Up to four continued Education units will be available in the following categories: General Standard Core, Private Applicator, Ornamental & Turf, Limited Urban Fertilizer, Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance, Limited Lawn and Ornamental, Commercial Lawn, and Ornamental.

The registration fee of $30.00 (plus $3.85 Eventbrite fee) will include lunch and class materials. Participants must register online by Feb. 19. The registration fee after Feb. 19 or at the door increases to $40.00 (plus a $4.52 Eventbrite fee, if online). The class is limited to 30 participants. There are no refunds for the registration fee.

Beekeeping Series: Swarm Control – Feb. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the UF/IFAS Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory (1881 Natural Area Dr., Gainesville). 

This class is designed for beginner and intermediate beekeepers and will demonstrate how to perform colony splits to prevent swarming.

Live bees will be used. Please wear protective clothing (closed-toe shoes, long sleeves, or bring your beekeeping suit if you own one).

The registration fee of $20.00 (plus $3.18 Eventbrite fee) will include materials and refreshments. Participants must register online by Feb. 21. A late fee of $10.00 (plus $3.85 Eventbrite fee) will be applied after Feb. 21 or if you are paying at the door. This class is limited to 30 participants. There are no refunds for the registration fee.
