The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Family and Consumer Sciences programs for February 2022. These programs are being offered by Martha B. Maddox, Family & Consumer Sciences Agent, at the Alachua County Ag Auditorium (22712 W Newberry Road, Newberry).
Freezing Food Safely – February 1, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
In this class, participants learn the basics of preserving food safely with freezing, water bath canning, and pressure canning. Participants also learn the advantages and disadvantages of freezing, how freezing affects food, freezer selection, food safety guidelines, packing materials, freezing guidelines, and methods. The registration fee includes tasting and samples.
The registration fee is $25.00. Participants must
register online by January 27, 2022. This class is limited to 25 participants, and there will be no refunds for registration fees. This class is subject to cancellation if less than five people are registered. If the workshop is canceled, the registration fee can be used for a future program.

Water Bath Canning of Jams & Jellies – February 8, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
In this class, participants learn water bath canning techniques and preserving jelly safely. This program includes hands-on demonstrations with a lecture on making jams and jellies, how to make freezer jam, equipment needed, food safety guidelines, water bath guidelines, and methods. The registration fee includes tasting and samples.
The registration fee is $25.00. Participants must
register online by February 3, 2022. This class is limited to 25 participants, and there are no refunds for registration fees. This class is subject to cancellation if less than five people are registered. If the workshop is canceled, the registration fee can be used for a future program.

Food Preservation-Basic Pressure Canning 101 – February 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
This class covers methods of preserving food, food safety guidelines, pressure canning, equipment needed (jars and lids), sterilization, filling and sealing jars, storing home-canned food, and methods not recommended. The registration fee includes samples and a booklet.
The registration fee is $25.00. Participants must
register online by February 9, 2022. This class is limited to 20 participants, and there are no refunds registration fees. This class is subject to cancellation if less than five people are registered. If the workshop is canceled, the registration fee can be used for a future program.
