Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony

The Gainesville Community Remembrance Project in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) of Montgomery, Alabama, is holding a Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 10 a.m., at the Martin Luther King Jr Multipurpose Center (1028 N.E. 14th Street, Gainesville). The Dedication Ceremony is free, and the public is invited to attend. It will also be streamed live online.

This event is part of the Gainesville Community Remembrance Project’s work for truth and reconciliation regarding the history of racial terrorism and lynching in Alachua County during the Jim Crow era. This event commemorates the traumatic era by memorializing the lives of Gainesville victims.

Michelle Duster will speak about her great-grandmother, Ida B Wells, a courageous activist involved in organizing for racial justice in Florida during the Jim Crow era. Representatives from EJI will be present for the ceremony.
