June 4-H Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following 4-H programs for June 2018. These programs are being offered by Amanda Morgan, 4-H Agent, and Mary Lee Andrewskiewicz, 4-H Program Coordinator, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville), with the exception of the Shotgun Day Camp, and Camp Cherry Lake.

Shotgun Day Camp - June 4 through June 8, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Gator Skeet & Trap Club (5202 N.E. 46th Avenue, Gainesville)

Participants learn shotgun safety (two levels: outdoors with moving targets, and indoors with gun maintenance). The camp ends with the annual Summer Trap Championship. All shooting will take place in a supervised environment. Shotguns, ammunition, and snacks are provided. This program is limited to ten youth. This camp is for children ages 12 through 18, and is for children of various experience levels.

1: EXPERIENCED LEVEL: This level is for those who have been through the 4-H beginner’s course. Will shoot two rounds per day and three on Friday (tournament). They explore both trap and skeet. The camp cost is $170 (with additional fees).

2: BEGINNER LEVEL: No prior experience is needed for this level. Participants will shoot one round of trap per day. The camp cost is $65.00 (with additional fees) and runs from Monday through Wednesday.

3: BEGINNER 2: If the beginner decides he/she likes shotgun shooting, he/she may stay for the rest of the week, and pay for an additional three rounds (including one round on Thursday and two on Friday). This camp costs $65.00 (with additional fees).

Wilderness Survival Day Camp - June 6, through June 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This camp offers outdoor activities that are helpful for kids interested in hiking/camping. Skills include fire starting, water purification, finding food in the wild, first-aid, building a shelter and more. Campers will put these skills and knowledge to the test by performing survival activities at Poe Springs.

Participants must bring a bagged lunch. Snacks are provided. The camp is limited to 15 participants, and is for children Ages 11 and older.

The camp costs $60. Participants must register online. There are no refunds for registration fees.

Dog Training – June 8, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

4-H will be holding their first dog training session on Friday, June 8, at 6 p.m., at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39 Ave., Gainesville). Youth ages 8 to 18 can participate with dogs six months and older. They will focus on obedience and showmanship for the summer trainings. Dogs are required to be current on rabies vaccine prior to attending training. Parents are required to stay for the duration of the training session (approximately one hour).

All about Insects Day Camp - June 11 through 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This camp teaches about all things insect, including pollinators, aquatic bugs, and gardening to attract beneficial insects. Participants will have a great appreciation for bugs, and leave with everything they need to start their own insect collection.

Participants must wear closed-toed shoes and bring a bagged lunch. The registration fee includes bug collecting equipment, field trips, and snacks. This camp is limited to 15 participants, and is for children ages 9 to 12.

Cost is $140.00 (with a $9.85 fee). Participants must register online. There are no refunds for registration costs.

4-H Camp Cherry Lake - June 18 through June 22, at Cherry Lake 4-H Camp (3861 N.E. Cherry Lake Circle, Madison)

Campers ages 8 to 12 are invited to attend (do not have to be a 4-H member). Daily activities include swimming, canoeing, games, nature study, recreation, and fishing. Evening activities include cabin skits, crafts, leisure sports, dancing, cabin competitions, and campfires. Campers will live in rustic cabins that are divided into boys and girls sections overlooking Cherry Lake.

The camp is supervised by Alachua, Gilchrist, Citrus and Levy County 4-H faculty and UF/IFAS 4-H camp staff.

Cost is $270.00 (with a $17.10 fee). Participants must register online. There are no refunds for registration costs.
