The Alachua County Public Works Department staff were excited to participate in Santa Fe High School’s Career Fair for the first time. The four-hour event was held last week inside and in front of the Santa Fe High School gymnasium. Staff, many of which are Santa Fe High School alums, greatly enjoyed talking with the students.
The career fair was an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about how the Public Works Department keeps Alachua County moving and how it could be a great career choice. For example, the Department’s Fleet Maintenance Division is responsible for helping to specify, order, and maintain the rolling stock for all Alachua County departments, including Fire Rescue’s 27 ambulances, 14 fire engines, eight brush trucks, four tankers, one ariel truck, one mass casualty bus, and one heavy rescue.
Alachua County Fleet Manager Gerald Bailey explained to one of the students with pride, “Every time I see one of our emergency units on its way to help someone, I know we played a part in helping to get our rescue personnel there safely and that their equipment will function properly, so they can do their job.”
Now is a great time to start a career with the Public Works Department. Those graduating high school or college should consider applying for one of the several positions currently open in the Department. Benefits include competitive starting salaries, health insurance, retirement, and training, including the opportunity to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at no cost to the employee. A savings of approximately $5,000.
