Alachua County Tourism and Economic Development Launches Complimentary Hospitality Certification Pilot Program to Invest in the Local Tourism Workforce

​​Visit Gainesville, Alachua County, is launching a pilot program to empower the local hospitality and tourism workforce with essential guest service skills. This initiative provides complimentary access to the prestigious Certified Guest Service Professional (CGSP) certification, a globally recognized credential through the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI).

The two-hour certification program consists of seven modules covering key topics such as professionalism, inclusivity, communication, service recovery and more. Designed to promote career development and continuing education, the program equips participants with the knowledge and skills to deliver exceptional service in every interaction. It reflects Alachua County’s commitment to fostering workforce growth and strengthening the hospitality sector as a vital driver of the local economy.

“Investing in our hospitality workforce is investing in the future of our local tourism industry,” said Jessica Hurov, director of Tourism and Economic Development for Alachua County. “This certification program ensures that our hospitality professionals have the tools and training to provide top-tier guest experiences, enhancing our region’s reputation as a welcoming and dynamic destination.”

Alachua County attracts nearly 1.5 million visitors yearly who stay in paid overnight accommodations, generating over $738 million in economic impact. In 2024 alone, direct visitor spending contributed more than $474 million to local businesses. 

“As we prepare to welcome thousands of international visitors for the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships in March 2025, this program ensures our hospitality workforce is ready with unparalleled service,” said Alachua County Commissioner and Chair of the Tourist Development Council Marihelen Wheeler. “By earning the CGSP certification, local professionals will be equipped to deliver world-class service, showcasing Alachua County’s commitment to excellence in hospitality.”
