2025 Annual Report & FY 26 Budget Message
Alachua County Manager Michele Liberman presented the 2025 Annual Report to the County Commission.

It was followed by the manager’s FY26 budget message. The commission will review the budget and make any necessary changes before its adoption.

Animal shelter update
The commission heard an update from the manager on the siting of a new animal shelter. Plan A continues to be the site on the University of Florida campus. The county property, known as the Weisman tract along Waldo Road, has been identified as Plan B.
A recommendation for the new location will be brought back to the commission for consideration in September.

East Gainesville Legacy Project
The commission voted to restart the process for seeking proposals for the development of workforce and market-rate housing on the east Gainesville Legacy property.
County staff will bring back a recommendation to issue an Invitation to Negotiate (ITN) or Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for potential developers before they submit a project scope for consideration, which will include the number of units, a timeline for completion and community engagement.

Watermelon Pond purchase
The commission approved the purchase of a parcel of land in the Watermelon Pond area between Newberry and Archer. The 80-acre property will connect to other parcels already projected to be purchased, expanding the preservation footprint to 483 acres.
The voter-approved Wild Spaces Public Places surtax will fund the approximately $1 million acquisition.
