March Environmental Horticulture Program

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental Horticulture program for March 2026. This program is being offered by Environmental Horticulture Agent Cynthia Nazario-Leary and Master Gardener Volunteers.

Bonkers for Bulbs – Gardening with Geophytes in North Florida – March 19, 2026, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., at the Alachua County Ag Auditorium (22716 W. Newberry Road).

Although spring-flowering bulbs like crocus, hyacinths and tulips are tough to grow in Florida, there’s a surprising variety of subtropical and tropical bulbs that make worthy additions to your Florida garden.

This presentation will introduce you to the wonderful world of geophytes (plants with underground storage organs) and explain why they are such tough and reliable garden plants. We will look at the types of geophytic plants that do best in North Florida, with an eye toward selecting an assortment of species to provide year-round interest in the landscape.

There is no registration fee, but participants must register online. It is limited to 100 participants.

Mark your calendars for the Master Gardener Volunteer Spring Plant Sale, Saturday, May 2, 2026. Doors open at 8 a.m. Bring your wagons and carts and shop an assortment of Florida-friendly and native plants.
