September Commercial Horticulture Programs

farmThe UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Commercial Horticulture Programs for September 2020. These programs are being offered by Dr. Tatiana Sanchez, Commercial Horticulture Agent.

Ag Entrepreneurship Series: Farm Business Planning & Marketing for your Small Farm (With Kevin Athearn, Regional Specialized Agent, Rural & Agribusiness Development through an IFAS online learning platform.)

These are part of a three short course series on Agricultural Entrepreneurship. See information below for courses 2 and 3.

Course 2: Farm Business Planning – Online access: August 28 to September 10. Live Webinar: September 11

This course will teach how to conduct market research and a SWOT analysis, develop a mission statement, marketing plan, operations plan, human resource plan, financial plan, and risk management plan. Participants must register by August 28.

Course 3: Marketing for Your Small Farm – Online access: September 11 to 24. Live Webinar: September 25

This course will teach how to define a marketing strategy and competitive advantage, create a brand image and make use of promotional support from available programs, evaluate pros and cons of different types of market channels, use social media and online payments, sell through CSAs, farmers markets, roadside stands, and other programs. Participants must register by September 11.

The registration fee for each course is $35.00. Those planning to participate in both courses will save $5.00 by requesting a promo code after your first enrollment. Participants must register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402). There are no refunds for the registration fee.

Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance – September 17, from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Bradford County Extension Office (2266 N. Temple Avenue, Starke)

The Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance Workshop trains commercial landscape maintenance personnel to make correct pesticide applications to ornamentals and plant beds only. Attendance to the full day is required before sitting for the license’s exam. Exams will not be offered after the class.

Those wanting to test must get a voucher number at https://aesecomm.freshfromflorida.com and make an appointment at https://pesticideexam.ifas.ufl.edu/ (or email your local County Extension office). Study guides are not provided, but can be ordered online. It is recommended that attendees study prior to attending the workshop as this is a review. Books required are: SM 1, SP 499 and SM 82.

Up to six CEU’s will be available in General Standard/Core, Ornamental & Turf, Limited Lawn & Ornamental, Limited Landscape Maintenance, Limited Urban Fertilizer, Commercial Lawn & Ornamental. Individuals seeking recertification may attend the class for four hours if pre-registered on Eventbrite. 

The registration fee is $30.00 per person for full day (includes lunch) or $15.00 (no lunch) for half-day. Participants must register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402) by September 11. A late fee of $10.00 will be applied for registrations after September 11, or if paying at the door. There will be no refunds for the registration fee. This event is limited to 13 participants. 

Participants must practice social distancing during this event, and masks are required while indoors. Those with medical conditions that can not wear a mask must contact the agent for online options.
